Student Struck, Killed Near North Miami Senior High School: Police

A North Miami Senior High School student was killed and two others injured after they were hit by a car as they walked to school early Tuesday morning.

The driver of a car slammed into three kids as they crossed 135th Street at 7th Avenue on their way to North Miami High School.

Jelani Jackson said he saw the accident, "I'm not sure if he saw the kids crossing, all I saw was bodies going up in the air."

Henry Toussaint died at the scene. He was a senior, a boy who sent money from his part-time job home to his mom in Haiti.

Henry's father collapsed in agony, overcome by grief. Family members came to the scene to comfort him.

"The worst thing about it is the dad spoke with him last night and now he's dead, that's the worst part," said relative Shirley Remy.

Sisters Carolina and Laura Perez were also injured. Laura was airlifted to the trauma center.

"It's truly a tragic accident. A lot of time to kind of repair from this," said Major Ann Cardona with North Miami Police.

Even though the crash happened before the school zone was in operation, students who spoke with NBC 6 said they wish drivers would pay more attention.

"If you see kids crossing the street, you should not speed anyways. Anyone who is crossing, especially kids. Because it's three lives and one is dead, so it's hard. It's hurtful," said student Lori Noboa.

"You'll get the occasional people that will stop for you or wait, but most of them really don't care," student Joel Berthulien said.

The car that hit the students remained at the scene. It is not known whether any charges will be filed against the driver. Police haven't said whether speed, intoxication or texting were contributing factors.

An investigation is active and ongoing.

Family and friends have created a memorial near the crash scene. They've left photos and other touching momentos, as they mourn the loss of a young man.

"He had goals. Like he had plans to finish high school and stuff. He only had one year left to graduate but he didn't end up making it. I just hope that he's in a better place right now," said Toussaint's sister.
