2 Arrested for Series of Armed Robberies at ATMs: BSO

Following a series of armed robberies of victims using bank ATMs, Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives set up surveillance in the hopes of nabbing the crooks.

At least five robberies had been reported from mid-December to mid-January in Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach.

BSO said the robberies typically involved two armed men walking up to unsuspecting victims at walk-up and drive-through ATMs. After startling the victims and holding them at gunpoint, the men would reportedly demand cash and then flee.

BSO criminal investigations detectives from both cities and robbery detectives requested the assistance of the Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response team (V.I.P.E.R.) to help catch the culprits.

On Jan. 25, V.I.P.E.R. detectives were conducting surveillance at the Bank of America located at 1000 Federal Highway in Pompano Beach when they saw three men loitering in the area. As detectives approached to speak with the men, they fled.

Detectives said Kinsley Stephens and Jordan McDowell, both 17, were apprehended without incident. The third subject remains at large.

In an interview with detectives, Stephens and McDowell admitted to committing five robberies in Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach. They also admitted they were contemplating committing a robbery before having a run-in with the V.I.P.E.R. unit.

It's unclear what charges the suspects face or whether they've hired attorneys.
