Two Colombians have been extradited to the U.S. to face charges stemming from a drug smuggling ring that used cargo ships at Port Everglades.
Federal prosecutors said Omar Alejandro Vanegas Lora and Edinson Antonio Ahumada Arboleda made their initial appearances Friday in Miami federal court. They were extradited a day earlier from Colombia. Court records did not list attorneys for either man.
Authorities say the two Colombians and employees at King Ocean Services at the port smuggled hundreds of pounds on cargo ships beginning in 2009. Several King Ocean employees have also been charged.
According to U.S. prosecutors, Vanegas Lora was the elected mayor of the Colombian town of Tenerife from 2011 until his arrest in the drug case.
