A second man has been arrested in the shooting of an off-duty Doral police officer during an armed robbery, police said Friday.
Demetrius Jones, 23, is facing charges of attempted second-degree murder with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery on a person 65 or older and armed burglary, Miami-Dade Police officials said. Kionne Bell, 22, was arrested Wednesday on similar charges in the shooting of Lt. Gary King.
Police say King, 70, was ambushed along with his wife in the driveway of their Palmetto Bay home. King and his wife were followed home by Bell and Jones, officials said.
During the robbery, there was a struggle and King was shot in the arm. He was hospitalized in stable condition and released from the hospital on Thursday. His wife suffered minor injuries.
Police say King was able to pick Jones out of a photographic lineup.
At his home Friday, King thanked his fellow officers for their support and thanked the media for covering the story. He said his wife was doing good.
"It's a shame they would beat up a lady," King said. "She stood up pretty well."
King, who said he's been an officer since 1969, said he was glad the suspects were caught.
"They attack anybody they can, they're predators," he said. "They're off the street, that protects everyone and that makes me feel good."
Both Jones and Bell were being held without bond Friday, jail records showed.
