3 Killed in Head On Crash on Tamiami Trail

NBC 6's Ari Odzer has the story after three people were killed in a head-on crash on the Tamiami Trail on Wednesday night. (Published Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014)

Three people were killed and another person critically wounded in a severe head-on crash on the Tamiami Trail in Miami-Dade County when a Lexus driver tried to pass in a no-pass zone and slammed into an oncoming Jeep, officials said.

The vehicles collided just before 7 p.m., about 11 miles west of Krome Avenue at what is known as "the bend," the Florida Highway Patrol said.

"It was a severe head-on collision," FHP spokesman Joe Sanchez said. "The one thing we can determine is that three lives were lost, and one of the main factors was one of the vehicles was traveling at a high rate of speed."

Justin Case Rabago, 35, was driving a Lexus IS300 when he tried to pass in a no-pass zone and hit a Jeep heading in the opposite direction, according to an FHP report.

Rabago and the two people in the Jeep — tourists from Britain and Germany — were killed at the scene, FHP officials said. The tourists' identities will be released after the next of kin are notified, the FHP said.

Rabago's passenger, 33-year-old Glen McKinley Osceola, was airlifted to Kendall Regional Hospital.

Osceola is a member of the Miccosukee tribe and Rabago is a member of a tribe in Idaho, the FHP said.
