Three Broward charter schools closed their doors to students Friday, a day after the school board was notified of the closures.
Eagle Charter Academy and SMART Charter School in Lauderdale Lakes and Touchdowns4Life Charter Middle School in Tamarac all closed Friday, according to a posting on the Broward County Public Schools website.
The governing boards of the charter schools notified the school board Thursday that they would be voluntarily closing their doors, the posting said.
"It's crazy because they could at least keep school until the end of the school term. Now we've got to be running up and down and trying to put kids in the school," said Tamar Singh, a mother.
A statement released by Broward Schools on Friday said the governing board of Touchdowns4Life voted on Tuesday to terminate its charter contract.
The management company of Eagle and SMART sent a letter to parents on Wednesday telling them the schools would be closing, the statement said. The letter said the closures were due to low enrollment.
Eagle and Smart have about 400 students between them, while Touchdowns4Life has 44 students, officials said.
Students are welcome to attend their District "home" school and can find them on the District's School Locator or by calling 754-321-2380.
"I feel sad the school is shutting down because I really like it here," said middle school studen Chantia Burrell.
Eagle Charter Academy has been in the news recently amid allegations former dean Jeffrey London molested at least three boys over an 18-year period. London has pleaded not guilty.
