3 Dead After Car Accident in Lakeland

Three people are dead after a car accident in Lakeland that police said was caused by a speeding vehicle.

Lakeland police said 26-year-old Michael Marrero lost control of his vehicle Saturday and crossed into oncoming traffic on U.S. 98. Marrero struck a Nissan driven by 22-year-old Christopher Stewart.

Stewart's vehicle ran off the road and rolled over. Stewart and 22-year-old passenger Kathrin R. Pitock were declared dead at the scene. A second passenger, 25-year-old Brittany Lewis, was taken to a hospital where she died. All three were Lakeland residents.

Marrero was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition Sunday. Police said he will be charged once the accident investigation is finished.
