2 in Custody After Firing at Coral Gables Police Cruiser: Officials

It is unclear why the suspects fired at the officer.

Coral Gables residents were woken up to the sound of gunfire and helicopters Sunday morning after police said two suspects were caught firing a gun in the neighborhood.

Police said one of the rounds hit an officer's patrol car as he sat on duty, sparking a neighborhood-wide search for the suspects.

"I heard gunshots," said a resident named Debra. "I heard about four gunshots and then a delay and then a fifth one. And for a moment I thought it was crazy kids with firecrackers, cause that happens around here every now and then. "

Authorities said the officer was patrolling the area of Old Cutler Road and Sierra Circle at 5:50 a.m. when the round struck the his car.

The officer was uninjured, so he pursued and apprehended the suspect, officials said. Police set up an active perimeter and found another suspect.

"It's an incredibly quiet, safe place to live, so this is very much out of the ordinary," said another neighbor named David.

Police identified the suspects as Emilio Estevez and Shyam Zaveri, both 25. Estevez was charged with discharging a firearm in public and using a firearm while under the influence of alcohol. Zaveri was charged with discharging a firerarm in public.

Several agencies were called to the scene to help find suspects including Sweetwater's police aviation unit, Miami-Dade's police aviation and K-9 units, South Miami Police and Miami Police.
