Mother Killed, Son In Critical Condition After Violent Collision in NW Dade

A woman was killed and 2 others, including the woman's 6-year-old son, were rushed to the hospital Tuesday after a violent collision in Miami Gardens.

The crash happened just before 5 p.m. on Northwest 213th Street and 37th Avenue. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the 32-year-old female driver, identified as Lakevia Harris, was killed in the crash. Her 6-year-old son, Melvin Cox, was airlifted to Joe Dimaggio Children's Hospital in critical condition.

"Traumatic. The first thing I noticed a young baby, and infant in the road. The guy in the Corvette unconscious, bobbing his head back and forth," a witness told NBC 6 reporter Jamie Guirola.

The driver of the second vehicle, a Corvette, was rushed to Aventura Hospital in serious condition. Little Melvin was airlifted to Joe Dimaggio Children's Hospital.

Aerial footage showed two vehicles with extensive front-end damage. The deceased woman's Hyundai was split in two. Miami Gardens Police said it was an angle colision, not a head-on collision as previously reported.

Harris also has two teen daughters. Family members were huddled at the hospital mourning her death and praying for the 6-year-old's recovery.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash. It's unclear if any charges will be filed.
