4 Recent South Florida Home Invasions With Kids Home Alone

From Davie to southwest Dade, kids have resourcefully responded to the encounters

For the fourth time in one week, kids are found in the middle of a home invasion.

On Wednesday two kids were even tied up in their home while the robber went to work.

Luckily, all of the home invasions that had kids home at the time have ended safely. Three of the four ended in arrests.

Fifteen-year-old Wesley Chau and his 12-year-old brother Kelvin are getting back to normal after police said 30-year-old Loufkens Bredy gave them a surprise Wednesday afternoon in their Davie home.

"I woke up around 1:30 and there was this guy at my doorway and he just looked at me – surprised that I was home," Wesley Chau explained. "I guess he was like, coming in to rob an empty house, he thought."

So he asked the brothers to tie themselves up with what they could find in their garage.

"He didn't have a weapon on him so I kind of thought it was a joke," Wesley Chau said. "I don't think anyone would come in unprepared like that, so I didn't take it that seriously."

But a neighbor noticed Bredy's car in the driveway, didn't recognize it, and knocked on the door. Kelvin Chau said Bredy told him to answer it.

"I told him we're getting robbed and to call the cops," Kelvin Chau said.

The neighbor also took down Bredy's license plate number. It didn't take long until he was found and arrested. He faces charges including home invasion and kidnapping.

Police are still looking for a robber in southwest Miami-Dade. That's where a 15-year-old was home alone when a person broke into his house Thursday morning. The teen locked himself in his room and texted his dad. By the time the police responded, the robber was gone.

In Pompano Beach, a 13-year-old and 10-year-old were home when three teens broke in. The two hid in a closet in a locked bedroom. One of them told a 911 operator the intruders were in the room next door, saying, "Please come right now."

Three other kids were arrested that same day after breaking into a Hollywood home where an 11-year-old was home alone. That boy hid with his dog and called 911, whispering to a dispatcher until police officers were able to pull him to safety from his window.

Back in Davie, Wesley and Kelvin Chau are glad Bredy is behind bars and his criminal day job is over.

"He was a bit nervous, like not knowing what he was supposed to do," Kelvin Chau said.

Police say that in most such cases, robbers will knock on the door to see if anyone is home. So without opening the door to strangers, make it look like there is activity in the house – and hopefully whoever is outside will steer clear.
