4-Year-Old Dies After Being Struck by Car: Sunrise Police

Police said the driver remained on scene.

A 4-year-old has died after being struck by a car Saturday night, according to Sunrise Police.

Police said a car traveling southbound at the 4100 block of Pine Island Road lost control as the driver tried to avoid another car just after 8 p.m. Officials said the car then hit three pedestrians that were walking on the sidewalk: a 37-year-old mother, an 8-month-old infant and a 4-year-old child.

The three were taken to the hospital, where 4-year-old Abdallah Staih later died, according to police.

Police said the infant, Ahmad Staih, is in the intensive care unit in stable condition. The mother, identified as Natali Munzer Alja'ouni, is listed as critical but stable.

The driver remained on scene after the crash, police said.

Neighbors recounted the shock of hearing the crash.

"I heard the noise -- zoom, boom!" said Sergio Bruno. "And I didn't hear nothing after that."

It's not the first time a group of pedestrians has been struck by a car on Pine Island Road. Last Christmas, a 61-year-old grandmother was killed while crossing the road at Sunset Strip. She was traveling with her two young grandchildren in a stroller. The 1- and 2-year-old were sent to the intensive care unit with serious injuries. Police at the time believed the grandmother, Li Fang Dong, may not have been using a crosswalk.

Some pedestrians said you shouldn't have to worry about your safety while on the sidewalk, but on busy Pine Island Road, you can't be too careful.

"Sometimes they are speeding," Bruno said.

When asked if drivers just had to be on their guard all the time, Bruno said, "That's it."

Police said Monday that they are still actively investigating the incident.
