STAR TREK ACTOR TO RECEIVE GAY ADVOCACY AWARD

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force has announced that Star Trek actor George Takei will receive the 2013 National Leadership Award. Takei will receive the award at the 17th Annual Miami Recognition Dinner, which is scheduled for Nov. 9 at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach. The dinner honors individuals for their contributions to the social, cultural, political and humanitarian needs of the LGBT community.

FLORIDA RANKED AS 12TH LEAST OBESE STATE IN NATION

A new report says that Floridians rank 12th in the nation when it comes to having a healthy weight. The report released this week found that 35 percent of Floridians have a healthy weight — while the overall adult obesity rate is 25.2 percent. The report was put together by the Trust for America's health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

WOMAN DEAD FOLLOWING HOUSE FIRE

A Miami woman is dead after becoming trapped in a house fire. Miami Fire Rescue reports that 68-year-old Monica Joachim was found inside the Liberty City home Tuesday evening.

FPL, SISTER COMPANY TO CUT 1,000 POSITIONS

Florida Power & Light and its sister company, NextEra Energy Resources, plan to eliminate about 1,000 positions nationwide over the next two years. The utility announced the cuts Wednesday. It includes 6.7 percent of the companies' combined workforce. An FPL spokesman said only about 160 workers will lose their jobs. The remaining cuts will come from the elimination of open positions, early retirement and normal attrition.

FIU FRAT SUSPENDED OVER FACEBOOK POSTS

Florida International University officials have suspended the school's Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity chapter following a series of Facebook posts. An anonymous e-mail recently sent to local media and members of the FIU community included screenshots of Facebook posts that appeared to show fraternity members discussing the hazing of new members, which is prohibited by university policy.

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON HOLLYWOOD BEACH MARGARITAVILLE

Groundbreaking for the new 845,000 square-foot Hollywood Beach Margaritaville will happen Thursday at 10 a.m. on Johnson Street and the A1A. The $147 million-dollar, Jimmy Buffet-inspired, 356-room Margaritaville Hotel and Resort is set to open in 2015.
