FLORIDA OFFICIALS HELP PREPARE KIDS FOR COLLEGE, WORK
Mayors, city council members and local leaders from around the state are taking on a new challenge aimed at getting Florida youth ready for college, work and life by age 21. Leaders from each community will meet in Tampa next week for a 2-day training to develop more cohesive community supports for children and families.
BALLOTS STOLEN ON EVE OF FLORIDA HOUSE ELECTION
Authorities are investigating the theft of ballots cast in a special legislative election in Florida's Panhandle. Two safes containing early-voting and absentee ballots for the Florida House District 2 special election were stolen over the weekend from the South Santa Rosa Service Center.
TWO WHALES DEAD AFTER WASHING ASHORE
Two pygmy sperm whales have died after washing ashore in South Florida. Authorities say the mother and calf washed ashore Monday evening near Carlin Park in Jupiter. Mother died a few hours after washing ashore and her calf had to be euthanized.
TWO MEN DIE IN PANHANDLE RIP CURRENTS
Two men died after one was caught in a rip current off a Florida Panhandle beach and another man tried to save the first. Three lifeguards went after the men and eventually pulled them to shore. They were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were both pronounced dead.
MARLINS BUSES FOR BASEBALL
Miami Marlins outfielder Juan Pierre and teammates will host a Major League Baseball Players Trust Buses for Baseball. The players will welcome 50 children from Miami’s Overtown Community as part of the program that provides transportation, game tickets and personal greetings from players to underprivileged children.
NORTH MIAMI'S NEW MAYOR INDUCTED
North Miami’s newly elected Mayor and City officials will be inducted at a ceremony Tuesday. Mayor Lucie M. Tondreau, Councilwoman Carol Keys and Councilman Philippe Bien-Aime will be inducted.
