TAMPA BAY-AREA MAN DEAD AFTER SHOOTOUT WITH POLICE
St. Petersburg Police say the man fired at officers in a parking lot, with three bullets striking two police cars. The officers returned fire, and the man died at the scene. No officers were injured.
FAMU TRUSTEES DEBATE PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH
Florida A&M University is reopening its search for a new president, but there are questions about whether interim President Larry Robinson will be allowed to apply for the job. FAMU halted a search for a new president in March and is just now restarting it. But a presidential search committee Thursday debated whether Robinson should be a candidate.
PORT MANATEE OFFICIALS HEAR CUBA FERRY PROPOSAL
An officer of a company that wants to operate ferry service between Florida and Cuba has outlined his plans for the Manatee County Port Authority. An official with Havana Ferry Partners LLC says that once the legal obstacle posed by a U.S. embargo against Cuba is resolved, the company could operate fast ferries to the island nation.
MAN WHO KILLED TEEN GETS DEATH SENTENCE
A Florida Panhandle man convicted of killing a teenage Georgia girl on vacation with her family has been sentenced to death. Following a jury's unanimous recommendation, a Walton County judge handed down 23-year-old Steven Cozzie's sentence. Cozzie was convicted in June of first-degree murder, sexual battery, aggravated child abuse and kidnapping.
6 FACE CHARGES AFTER BOAT CAPSIZES OFF MIAMI
Six people who were on a small boat that capsized in the waters off South Florida now face federal charges. Four people died when the overloaded boat capsized early Wednesday seven miles east of Miami. Eleven survivors were rescued and taken into federal custody. One of the survivors is charged with attempted smuggling, and he's also charged along with five others with trying to return to the U.S. after being deported.
