NEW APP DESIGNED TO HELP FLORIDA FARMERS
Florida farmers will soon be able to coordinate their crops with a few swipes of their smartphones. A new program developed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in partnership with University of Florida's Automated Weather Network, will provide up-to-the-minute information on key weather variables, including rainfall, temperature, humidity, dew point, wind speed and wind direction.
GOVERNOR PROMISES TAX CUTS
Florida Gov. Rick Scott is kicking off a tour pushing $500 million in planned tax cuts around the state as he heads into what could be a tough re-election fight. Scott recently announced plans to ask legislators to cut taxes next year but hasn't specified which taxes and fees he wants to cut. He's expected to release more details at press conferences in South Florida on Tuesday.
MAN TAKES BANK BAG TO TEACH CO-WORKER LESSON
An assistant manager at a central Florida Burger King told authorities he took a bank bag home with him to teach a co-worker a lesson. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office reports that 32-year-old Montrale Hamilton was arrested over the weekend and charged with grand theft.
FLORIDA WILDLIFE OFFICIALS APPROVE 4 MORE LICENSE-FREE FISHING DAYS
Florida wildlife officials are adding four license-free fishing days. Florida already offers four license-free fishing days per year. Saltwater days this year were on June 1 and Sept. 1, and freshwater days were April 6 and June 8. FWC commissioners voted last week to hold additional saltwater license-free fishing days Oct. 12 and Nov. 30 and additional freshwater license-free days Nov. 29 and Dec. 28.
OPENING STATEMENTS IN FIU STABBING TRIAL
Opening statements are expected to begin Tuesday in the trial of a man charged in the stabbing death of Florida International University football player Kendall Berry. Quentin Wyche, 25, is charged with second-degree murder in the March 2010 stabbing death of Berry on FIU's campus.
SENTENCING CONTINUES IN FATAL CAUSEWAY HIT-AND-RUN
Sentencing continues Tuesday for Carlos Bertonatti, who pleaded guilty in the January 2010 crash on the Rickenbacker Causeway that killed bicyclist Christophe LeCanne.
