7.7 Pounds of Heroin Found in Passenger's Bag at Miami International Airport

A man who arrived in South Florida on a flight from Colombia was caught with 7.7 pounds of heroin worth about $210,000 at Miami International Airport, officials said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers selected the passenger for examination on Jan. 22 after there were inconsistencies in the passenger's purpose of traveling to Colombia, officials said.

When the passenger's bags were emptied, they were unusually heavy, and a powdery substance was found when officers probed some thick padding, officials said.

The passenger was arrested and charged with smuggling illegal narcotics.

“CBP officers work diligently 24/7 every day of the week to prevent the smuggling of illicit drugs from entering our nation," Miami International Airport Port Director Christopher Maston said in a statement.
