Officials have released 911 calls made the day Broward Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man that was walking down the street carrying a rifle.
Authorities opened fire on 33-year-old Jermaine McBean on Aug. 1 after deputies say he refused to drop the weapon he was carrying into the Green Tree Apartments at 5201 N. Dixie Highway in Oakland Park.
The 911 calls reveal the man walked along N. Dixie highway with the rifle before arriving at the apartment complex.
"Yeah, I am on Dixie Highway just north of Commercial Boulevard," said one caller. "There is a guy walking along carrying a rifle."
Another caller said McBean was acting erratic.
"He was screaming really loud to himself," she said. "It looks like a fake gun, but it looks like it could be real too."
Deputies arrived quickly and followed McBean into the apartment complex. They fired the fatal shots near an occupied swimming pool.
Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said the deputies identified themselves, and that one of the deputies fired when McBean turned towards them. Officials said the weapon turned out to be an air rifle.
The deputy who shot McBean was placed on administrative assignment, following BSO policy, as homicide detectives investigate the circumstances of the shooting.
