‘A Blessing': Pembroke Pines Officer Recovering After Near-Death Call

Jon Cusack, the Pembroke Pines Police officer who was injured after being dragged on the side of a vehicle by a suspect, is happy to be moving on and recovering from the horrid experience.

Cusack's body camera was rolling as he held on to a speeding car that topped speeds over 60 miles per hour in December.

The 19-year veteran was responding to a call about two people who possibly overdosed in a car. The officer tried to wake the driver, but then the driver drove off – the officer hanging on for his life.

Cusack survived but he is still recovering from his injuries.

“Looking down and seeing my injuries and my wounds was sort of an eye-opening moment where I kind of stopped and went, ‘wow," Cusack said. “I did think there was a point in time that I could die. –but, you know ... you do the best you can and you fall back on your training and you fall back on your instincts and my instincts were to, you know, stay alive and fight through this.”

The driver of the vehicle remains behind bars, facing 12 charges including felony attempted murder.
