NBC 6 was the South Florida station to get a first-hand look at Miami-Dade Transit’s brand new metrorail cars.
The county’s anticipated new rail cars arrived at the Lehman Center in Hialeah Tuesday for its final testing before riders can hop on. The new rail cars were manufactured by the Italian company Hitachi. After several changes and delays, the first car is here and will soon be put into service this summer.
The new trains boast a modernized look, bicycle racks and WiFi systems along with digital displays.
“We are convinced that the reliability is going to go way up and the ridership is going to increase. We want people to use mass transit and with the new equipment, we are pretty confident that is what's going to happen,” said the department’s deputy director, Steve Feil.
By 2019, 136 new trains are expected to be up and running in Miami-Dade County.
