Subtropical Storm Alberto Brings Threat of Flooding, Isolated Tornadoes on Sunday

What to Know

  • The threat for locally heavy rains continues for Memorial Day weekend.
  • A Flood Watch remains in effect for South Florida through Sunday.

As Subtropical Storm Alberto remains lopsided in the Gulf of Mexico, the impacts for South Florida and the Keys still look much the same for the holiday weekend.

The forecast track keeps the system in the Gulf of Mexico with an eventual landfall in the northern Gulf coast sometime on Monday afternoon.

A Flood Watch remains in effect for South Florida until late Sunday, with additional accumulations of 2-5” possible by Monday night.

Dangerous beach and marine conditions are anticipated to last through the weekend as a high risk for rip currents remains intact.

In addition to the potential heavy rainfall, a threat of isolated severe storms will be included for South Florida and the Keys late Saturday night and into Sunday morning.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency for Florida on Saturday in anticipation of Subtropical Storm Alberto, even though South Florida will not be directly impacted.

The emergency declaration is in effect for all 67 of Florida's counties.

The state of emergency allows state and local governments to have the time, resources and flexibility to prepare for the storm, Scott's office said.
