An alleged argument over a football bet turned deadly in one South Florida city over the weekend.

Police in Delray Beach say the shooting took place Saturday night around 11 p.m. According to NBC affiliate WPTV, a police department sergeant heard shots while patrolling the area and responded.

Witnesses told investigators that the two men had been arguing over a football bet. One man shot the other, after which the wounded man returned fire and hit the initial shooter – who was rushed to an area hospital where he later died.

Officials have not released the identity of either man as their investigation continues.
