American Airlines Flight Bound for Miami Diverted to Jamaica

An American Airlines flight bound for Miami from Bogota, Colombia was diverted to Kingston, Jamaica Monday evening after what the airline called a “pressurization issue.”

The flight landed safely at Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston around 7:30 p.m. after the incident. The flight, American Airlines flight 916, had a normal landing in Jamaica and was being examined by maintenance workers.

American Airlines director of communications Casey Norton said the no one on the flight was injured and all of the passengers were taken off the plane in Jamaica while the plane was being checked for any problems. The flight had 197 passengers and nine crew members.

American Airlines flew a replacement plane to Kingston where it was refueled and the passengers were flown to Miami. The passengers arrived at Miami International Airport around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

"I could tell something was wrong because we were descending pretty fast and then after a while we stopped descending and about 15-20 minutes later that's when the pilot came over and said that there was a problem and we were heading toward Kingston," passenger Edward Atencio said.
