Apparent Lightning Strike Threw 2 Boys From Cooper City Tree: Authorities

One teen fell 20-25 feet and lost consciousness, while the other landed on another branch

Two teenage boys were thrown from a tree by an apparent lightning strike in Cooper City Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

The teens were sitting on a large ficus tree at Chase Park, at 9100 Southwest 49th St., when lightning apparently hit it, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said. Authorities were called at 5:05 p.m.

One boy fell 20-25 feet, lost consciousness, and was taken as a trauma alert to Memorial Regional Hospital. The other teen landed on another branch and was able to get himself down, but he was also taken to the hospital, Jachles said.

Both of them were conscious and alert when they arrived there, he said.
