Arkansas State Threatens to Sue Miami Hurricanes Over Canceled Football Game Due to Hurricane Irma

What to Know

  • According to a letter from Arkansas State to UM obtained by KAIT-TV, the Red Wolves are claiming that the Hurricanes owe $650,000
  • A clause in the contract allowed for the game to be cancelled with no make-up date for a penalty.

With Hurricane Irma approaching South Florida last September, the Miami Hurricanes chose to cancel their scheduled game at Arkansas State over concerns the team would not be able to travel home after the game and players wanting to be with their families during that time.

Now, the Jonesboro, AR school is telling the ‘Canes they have until Thursday to pay up for canceling the game – or they will file a lawsuit to get money they say Miami owes.

According to a letter from Arkansas State to UM obtained by NBC affiliate KAIT-TV, the Red Wolves are claiming that the Hurricanes owe $650,000 for canceling the game as part of a contract signed in 2013.

“It is very unfortunate that we have been unable to resolve this matter, and we remain hopeful this can be worked out without the need for litigation,” said the school’s general counsel, Brad Phelps. “Ultimately, that will be up to the University of Miami.”

A clause in the contract allowed for the game to be canceled with no make-up date for a penalty. Miami canceled their September 9th game with the Red Wolves and moved their game the following weekend against rival Florida State to October 7th as a result of the storm’s impact on South Florida – which also forced the team to spend a week practicing in Orlando after Irma damaged part of the Coral Gables campus.
