Arrest Made in La Progresiva School Burglary: Police

Police say they've arrested a man in connection with a break-in at a school in Little Havana ewhere a safe containing $5,000 was stolen.

Miami Police arrested 35-year-old Jose Luis Galdames of Miami in connection with the break-in at the La Progresiva Presbyterian School. According to a police report, Galdames was being arrested for a separate incident when he spontaneously confessed to the La Progresiva break-in.

According to the police report, Galdames also admitted to breaking into yet another school in Little Havana.

Melissa Rego, principal of La Progresiva, said Monday that someone appeared to have broken in through the roof the night before and slipped down to the first floor of the school. When she arrived Monday morning, she found shattered glass, ransacked rooms and the safe containing about $5,000 gone.

The money was supposed to help pay for two school trips for the students.

"My heart is just torn up, but we have to trust God and know that everything is going to be fine and eventually we'll make it up somehow," Rego said.

Surveillance video obtained from the school appears to show a male matching Galdames' physical description breaking into the school. The person in the video is seen hitting the surveillance camera with an object.

Police said the suspect was on the property for more than an hour going from room to room and vandalizing the building.

"This criminal basically comes in this school like if it was his own home," said Lt. Freddie Cruz of Miami Police.

Galdames is facing several charges, including burglary, criminal mischief, grand theft and drug possession.

It's not known if Galdames has hired an attorney.
