Two people were killed after a car slammed into a pole in Downtown Miami early Thursday morning.

Officers and rescue crews responded to the single car crash at the intersection of South Miami Avenue and Southeast 1st Street before 5 a.m.

Miami Police Spokeswoman Kenia Fallat said one person was killed at the scene while a second person was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital where they later died. Their identities haven't been released.

According to Fallat, the vehicle appeared to have lost control after a car in front of it began to slow down. She said speed may have played a role in the crash.

The car that was in front stayed on the scene and the driver was interviewed, but no charges are expected.

Miami Police say that Miami Avenue was closed southbound and 1st Street was closed eastbound - as well as the Miami Avenue stop for the Metromover - as officers continue their investigation.
