Authorities Focus on Pharmacies As Part of Drug Crackdowns

Officials are now looking at more pharmacies too, as part of their crackdown on prescription drug abuse in the state

Authorities are scrutinizing more pharmacies along with pain clinics and doctors in their crackdowns on prescription drug abuse in Florida.

U.S. Attorney Wilfredo Ferrer tells The Miami Herald that investigators are seeing more pharmacies involved in the illegal trafficking of painkillers.

Since the summer, federal investigations have revealed drug trafficking rings involving oxycodone and seven pharmacies in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Part of the authorities' strategy involves charging pill mills and pharmacies as organized criminal enterprises.

The state also has restricted the permit process to open new pharmacies.

Last month, CVS notified some Florida doctors that its pharmacies will no longer fill their prescriptions for narcotics such as oxycodone. The company said it wanted to "prevent drug abuse and keep controlled substances out of the wrong hands."
