Authorities Investigating After 4-Year-Old Boy Found Dead in Coral Springs Apartment

Mother released from police station after questioning, police said

Police said they have released a Coral Springs mother they questioned Monday after her 4-year-old son was found dead inside their apartment.

Destene Simmons, 23, was released from the police station, police said. The mother of Antwon Hope still cannot go home because their apartment at 9022 NW 28th Drive remains a crime scene, however.

More than one phone call was placed to 911 from the apartment, according to police. Authorities said they found the 4-year-old boy deceased when they went to check on things after the calls.

"Sometimes it's a kid playing. Sometimes they don't even realize their phone line did it, but we always do a thorough investigation before we leave the scene and in this case, when officers went inside they found a deceased 4-year-old," said Carla Kmiotek, Coral Springs Police spokeswoman.

There was no immediate word on the cause of death. The medical examiner is expected to have an autopsy done on Tuesday, at which time police will know more, police said.

Neighbor Jennifer Snolis, who lives downstairs from the family, said she heard something between 10 and 11:30 p.m. Sunday night.

"You heard a noise like sneakers sound in the dryer. You know, that bum boom bum boom bum boom," she said.

Police wouldn't say if those noises had anything to do with the death.

Neighbors said the family had recently moved in. It wasn't clear where the father was.
