Authorities Look For Suspect in Violent Sledgehammer Attack

Victim in critical condition after attack in Miami market

Authorities are searching for the man who entered a Miami market Sunday and violently attacked a clerk with a sledgehammer.

The victim, Yue Kui Cen, 44, is currently in extreme critical condition, according to Miami-Dade Police.

Authorities say the suspect entered Alex’s Mini Market at 501 Northwest 12th Avenue and brought two gallons of milk to the register.  As Cen rang the items up, the suspect pulled a bottle from his pocket and sprayed Cen’s face with an unknown chemical, police said.

As Cen rubbed his eyes, the suspect walked around the counter and hit him in the back of the head with a sledgehammer several times, authorities said. He grabbed two cartons of cigarettes and fled the scene on his bike.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 50's or 60's, around 170 pounds and around 5-foot-8. He wore a white cap, a buttoned-down shirt, a grey hooded sweatshirt and black pants.

Anyone with information on this crime is urged to call the Miami Police Department’s Robbery Unit at 305-603-6370 or Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers at 305-471-TIPS.

"My husband is very innocent. He good guy," said Phuong Thuy Ly Cen, the victim's wife." He never angry to anybody ...  I don't know what happened."

And 9-year-old neighbor Adriana Gutierrez said she was sad to hear about the attack.

"Yeah, and because he's a very nice person and, you know, like, somebody that crazy would do something to him is really sad to hear about it," she said.

Meanwhile, neighbor Marta Louise Rodriguez couldn't believe it happened.

"I really can't believe it. Somebody has to say something to find, and look at the faces, look at everything to see if they can get him," Rodriguez said.
