Authorities Search for Sunglass-Wearing Motel Robbers

The robbery occurred at 10:40 p.m. on Oct. 15 at Executive Economy Lodge at 555 S. Federal Highway

Authorities were searching for two men they say robbed a Pompano Beach motel wearing dark sunglasses, put the money in a plastic bag and sprayed something in the clerk's face before getting away.

The robbery occurred at 10:40 p.m. on Oct. 15 at Executive Economy Lodge at 555 S. Federal Highway, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

The front office clerk was in the lobby when they walked in and made her way to the counter, where they requested a room, authorities said.

“I said do you want smoking or non-smoking room?" the clerk, who only gave her first name of Joan, told NBC 6 South Florida. "They said no, we want your money – pointed the gun at me. And he said you know I am going to shoot you. I said you don't need to shoot me. I will give you everything I have here.”

The clerk said one man pointed a small gun at her, while the other held the bag open for the money, the sheriff's office said.

"I was putting the money in and the man holding the gun said you are not moving fast enough. The guy that’s holding the bag said leave her alone, she's doing OK," Joan recalled.

They asked her if she had a stash of cash, but she told them there had just been a pickup, she said.

Joan said the two men who were about 25 were calm, but one of them sprayed her with a chemical after they had grabbed about $200 and figured out there was no other cash to be found.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
