BSO Deputy Finds $700,000 in Cocaine Floating in Ocean in Dania Beach

A Broward Sheriff's deputy on routine patrol found $700,000 worth of cocaine floating off the waters of Dania Beach, authorities said.

The cocaine was discovered Sunday when the marine patrol deputy spotted a burlap bag floating in the ocean a mile offshore between the Dania Beach Pier and the Port Everglades Inlet, the BSO said.

When the deputy opened the bag, which he at first thought was a trunk due to it's rectangular shape, he found 25 kilos of cocaine individually wrapped inside.

"Our marine patrol is vigilant. They are reminded all the time that narcotic trafficking is still prevalent," Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said in a statement Wednesday.

The discovery was made the same day a South Florida Yacht captain was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle more than 620 pounds of cocaine into West Palm Beach. Jonathan Costenbader and two others are facing charges in that incident.
