Endangered Baby Gorilla Born at Busch Gardens

An endangered western lowland gorilla was born at Tampa's Busch Gardens on Feb. 6.

The female gorilla is being cared for by her mother Mary, who is 27. The birth of the baby gorilla marks the third successful gorilla birth at Busch Gardens.

It is all part of the park's participation in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan.

“The first month will be the critical period as the mother, Mary, and the infant begin to integrate into the current gorilla troop, so the Busch Gardens animal care team will be monitoring their progress closely,” said Jeff Andrews, vice president of zoological operations for Busch Gardens.

Park guests will be able to check out the newborn at the Myombe Reserve Habitat in the next few days.
