Some of Miami’s most powerful movers and shakers are a little shaken up by a new book that reveals their dirty little secrets.
The book is called Miami Babylon, Crime, Wealth, and Power – A Dispatch from the Beach and it has already gotten its author blacklisted from the VIP party circuit in town, according to The Miami Herald.
But it’s getting all kinds of rave reviews from critics and Miami residents who would never get invited to a VIP party anyway.
Thankfully, Books and Books on Lincoln Road has never been known to snub the common folk of Miami.
On Tuesday, the Miami Beach bookstore will host the author, Gerald Posner, who will sign copies of his new book as well as read from it – much to the dismay of developer Jorge Perez and restaurateur Al Malnik who founded The Forge restaurant on Miami Beach.
Perez – known as the “Donald Trump of the Tropics” because of all the condos he has built down here – is described as a carousing womanizer.
And Malnik is described as having mafia ties, not that that story is anything new but Posner has apparently dug up records that further confirm what many have suspected for decades.
It is no surprise that Posner got himself disinvited to parties that were being planned in his honor, including one that was going to be thrown by Perez at his Icon Brickell condominium.
Publicist and former Herald gossip columnist Tara Solomon also canceled a party after she read what he wrote about Malnik, whose son now owns the famed restaurant and is one of her longtime clients.
But judging from some of the comments in the articles about the book, it is being well-received by local readers, including David L. Wylie, who left the following comment on Miami Beach 411:
Finished Posner’s Miami Babylon last weekend and found it fast-paced, titillating, extremely interesting and a down-right must read for anyone living in South Florida. I kept coming across names of folks that I personally know or, at least have met in passing. Great job Gerald! Can’t wait for your next literary offering!
Posner is an investigative journalist who has published several books that have been deemed credible.
To see what all the fuss is about, check out Posner at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Books and Books, 923 Lincoln Road on Miami Beach. For more information, call 305-532-3222.
