Back to School Freebies in South Florida

Where to score free stuff for the kids before classes start

It's two days and counting until Miami-Dade and Broward county students hit the books for the start of the new school year.

While many parents took advantage of last weekend's tax-free holiday for school supplies, what about those other items on kids' back to school check list? You can still get some last minute items without spending a dime.

This Saturday, the Lifestyle Barber and Beauty in Miami Gardens is offering fresh cuts for boys at no cost at all and it doesn't stop there.

"We're going to do our 2nd annual free haircut, free school supply and free food day," said James Thompson, of Lifestyle. "Backpacks, pencils, paper, folders, anything. Regular stuff you can give."

And what about some free food? Everyone loves that. But in this case, you have to give in order to receive.

"We're just encouraging people to donate supplies and if they donate four items, they get a free Chick-Fil-A sandwich," said Verene DeLeon, General Manager of the Miramar restaurant.

The book bags and supplies you donate will benefit students in need at the Broward Outreach Center.

"Why not get the community to help back the community?" DeLeon said. "The way to encourage people is to give them something free and they like the Chick-Fil-A sandwich."

There’s more. Although no one likes to get shots, students have to in order to return to class. On Saturday, the Miami-Dade health department is offering back to school physicals and immunizations. No appointment necessary. The shots are free.

As the last weekend of summer vacation approaches, you can get your child ready to hit the books without breaking the bank.

"Right now, the economy is kind of bad and a lot of people can't afford the haircuts," said Thompson. "They spend a lot of money trying to get the uniforms and all that so we feel we can give a little something back. We cut hair 365 days of the year, we can give them one."

Saturday's immunization and physical health clinics will be held at the West Perrine Health Center, the Jefferson Reaves Senior Center, and the Little Haiti Health Center from 8 a.m. until noon. There is a fee for the physical exams.
