Bahamas Charity Scams: Officials Warn of Potential Fraudulent Charities

While much of the nation is mobilizing to help the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian struck, officials are warning of potential charity scams exploiting the unfolding humanitarian crisis.

“Unfortunately, when we see catastrophic events like these, we also see scammers rush in to prey on the good intentions of generous Floridians,” said Attorney General Ashley Moody.

“Before you give to organizations seeking donations for Bahamas-restoration efforts, please take steps to ensure your donation is going to legitimate charities and entities.”

Those wishing to donate can take steps to ensure they aren’t giving to fraudulent relief charities. Here are some tips.

  • Don’t give your credit card number, gift card account number or bank account information over the phone.
  • Don’t give your credit card number, gift card account number or bank account information in an unsolicited e-mail.
  • Be wary of charities with similar-sounding names. “It is not unusual for scammers to choose names that sound like the names of legitimate, widely-known charities.”
  • Check the charity you’re giving to on www.CharityNavigator.org.
  • Research the organization you’re giving to get an idea of how much of your donation will go toward the work of the charity.
  • Visit IRS.gov and search the “Charities and non-profits” topics.
  • Research the organization’s background and reviews.
  • Search to see if there are any identical or extremely similar campaigns.
