It was a rude welcome back for some Broward school bus drivers Monday after they discovered some thieves had stolen batteries from more than a dozen buses during the holiday break.
The theft happened at the bus lot at 2600 Northwest 18th Terrace in Pompano Beach, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Officials say the discovery was made when the drivers reported to work Monday morning and their buses wouldn't start. In all, some 16 buses were broken into, officials said.
It's believed the thieves cut through a portion of the fence to get to the buses. Each bus has two batteries that are worth more an $100 a piece, officials said.

The thefts caused delays to the morning pickup routes and resulted in buses arriving late to schools, Broward Schools spokeswoman Nadine Drew said. The batteries were expected to be replaced in time for the afternoon, officials said.
Authorities are investigating the thefts.
