Bicyclist Killed in Hit and Run in Pembroke Pines

Police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a bicyclist in Pembroke Pines early Friday.

The incident happened shortly after 4 a.m. in the 700 block of South University Drive, Pembroke Pines Police.

When officers arrived at the scene they found 58-year-old David Lee Vaergis lying on the roadway with severe blunt force trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"My sister called me and told me something happened to my father," son Octavius Vaergis said. "He was a good guy, good guy. Everybody knows him, a good guy."

Police said Vaergis was riding his bicycle north in the southbound lane when he was struck by a 2006-2009 Ford Fusion, which fled the scene. The vehicle has right front end damage and is missing the right side passenger mirror.

A man who found Vaergis and called 911 said he tried to save him.

"We tried giving him CPR, he was banged up really, really bad, a lot of head injury," said the man, who didn't want to be identified.

Anyone with information is asked to call Pembroke Pines Police at 954-431-2200 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.

“You have got to accept responsibility,” Octavius said. “Come forward. There are no hard feelings, just a hard feeling if you don’t come forward.”
