BSO Detectives Investigating Fatal Traffic Crash in Pompano Beach

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives are investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist that occurred Tuesday morning in Pompano Beach.

Deputies were dispatched to the 600 block of East Copans Road in reference to a bicyclist hit by a car around 6 a.m.

Detectives are investigating how the bicyclist, who was later identified as 35-year-old Christopher Batista, initially ended up in the roadway. Detectives said he was already lying in the roadway when the driver of a 2000 Lincoln Continental struck him.

The driver remained on the scene and told investigators he was traveling westbound on East Copans Road in the center lane when he swerved to try to avoid Batista.

Detectives said there was no evidence the bicycle was struck by a vehicle.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded and pronounced Batista dead on the scene. The Broward Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause and manner of death.

Anyone with information or who may have seen Batista before he was struck is asked to contact Det. Michael Kelliher at (954) 321-4840.
