Birthday Bet Leads To Dania Beach Drowning

Friends say a man was intoxicated when he stripped to his boxers and jumped into a canal

A Dania Beach man was celebrating his 46th birthday Saturday night when he bet friends $50 he could swim across a canal behind his house.

Timothy Jordan didn't make it.

Friends say Jordan, who would have turned 46 on Tuesday, was drunk when he stripped down to his boxers and jumped into the canal behind NW 14th Way around 2 a.m.

He began struggling shortly after entering the water, and onlookers called 911.

Divers from the Broward Sheriff's Office Marine Unity pulled his body from the bottom of the 10-foot-deep waterway several hours later.

Authorities are treating his death an an accident.
