Bling, Bling! Ponzi Schemer's Wife Wins Back Seized Jewelry

Prosecutors must give back some pricey jewelry to Scott Rothstein's wife

Kim Rothstein has a little more pull in the legal system than her Ponzi-scheming hubby.

On Monday, a judge ruled the wife of convicted con artist Scott Rothstein was entitled to get some of the pricey pieces of jewelry back that federal authorities seized during their investigation of her husband, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

Kim Rothstein's attorneys claimed the watches, earrings and other jewelry that the feds took were not paid for by the billion-dollar Ponzi scheme Scott Rothstein ran, but instead were personal gifts from husband to wife before the scheme ever began.

Among the items to be returned are a diamond and ruby heart ring and pendant, and a necklace by David Yurman and several expensive watches. Most of the items the feds have seized will be sold at auction, with the proceeds going back to the victims of Rothstein's Ponzi scheme.

Scott Rothstein, once a powerful South Florida lawyer with strong political connections, is serving a 50-year prison sentence for organizing the fraud.

Kim Rothstein is trying to get back some other bling from the feds, but she will have to prove those were also gifts not funded by her husband's criminal enterprise. Whatever she receives, she may have to pawn to pay back creditors and the government, who are coming after the couple for cash.
