Boat Explodes in Miami River Canal, Causing Damage to Other Boats

The Miami Fire-Rescue Department on Tuesday responded to reports of a boat explosion on a canal near the Miami River.

The explosion occurred at 2115 NW 12th Street at about 1:30 p.m. Fire crews found a 24-foot boat fully enflamed and a 50-foot tour boat, which was dry-docked, also burning.

Miami Fire-Rescue Department spokesperson Capt. Ignatius Carroll said firefighters began to douse the flames on both boats while working to move other boats to safer locations.

An office building had to be protected by using fire lines until the fire was extinguished, which took about 30 minutes, Carroll said. Several other boats sustained minor damage due to intense heat.

No injuries occurred. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Carroll added.
