Boat Operator Arrested After Crashing Into Wood Piling

Authorities are investigating after jet boat with nine people on board crashed into a wood piling Saturday night, injuring one person.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. near the Venetian Causeway.

"While riding, they may not have been paying attention and struck this piling," said Capt. Ignatius Carroll of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Carroll said investigators are also working to determine if speed played a factor. The impact of the crash injured one woman, who was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is in charge of investigating the crash. FWC officials arrested the operator of the jet boat for boating under the influence after he failed a field sobriety test.

The boat took on water but did not sink. It was towed to the nearby Sea Isle Marina, while the remainder of the passengers on board were brought to shore by Fire Rescue.
