Boy, 3, In Critical Condition After Nearly Drowning in Pembroke Pines Pool

A three-year-old child is fighting for his life after nearly drowning in a Pembroke Pines community pool, police said

The incident happened Saturday in the Harbour Cove rental apartment complex, located in the 1600 block of South Hiatus Road. While there were other adults and children in the pool at the time of the incident, the three-year-old boy appeared to be swimming without direct supervision, according to an investigation.

Shortly after 5:50 p.m. – minutes after the child entered the water – other attendees at the pool noticed he was unresponsive and floating face down. Bystanders pulled the boy out of the pool and began performing CPR in an attempt to revive him.

Pembroke Pines Police Officer Mark Farah arrived on the scene and took charge of administering CPR on the child, according to a media release. Fire crews then transported the child to an area hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Officials say the boy’s condition is life-threatening. No other details were immediately available.

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1 to 4 years old and the second leading cause of unintentional death in children ages 5 to 9, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency reported that more than 60 percent of fatal drownings of children under the age of 4 occur in swimming pools.
