Boy, 3, Shot in Leg in Northwest Miami-Dade

A 3-year-old boy was hospitalized after he was shot in the leg in northwest Miami-Dade Sunday evening.

Family members said the shooting happened at a home in the 200 block of Northwest 82nd Street when the boy's mother's ex-boyfriend burst into the home and started a dispute.

Miami-Dade Police said Jenny Gomez, the mother of 3-year-old Jayden Gomez, was assaulted by the suspect, 20-year-old Ricardo Desravines.

Desravines, who is the father of the younger of Gomez's two sons, engaged in a fight with Gomez's current bofriend. Desravines took out a gun and at some point it went off, hitting Jayden in the leg. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's intensive care unit, but family members said he was expected to be fine.

"He could have been killed, he's innocent, he doesn't have anything to do with it," said the boy's uncle, Gilbert Hidalgo. "It's crazy."

A judge ruled Monday that Gomez and her two sons be placed with Belinda Bermudez, the boys' great grandmother.

Gomez did not comment following the hearing, but her father said he is happy that his grandson is recovering.

"Jayden is doing good," Melvin Gomez said. "The doctor is waiting to say it is okay to take him to the house."

Police are looking for Desravines, who has a criminal record that includes fleeing police, resisting an officer with violence and marijuana possession. Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
