Brag About Your School: Killian High School

Students at Killian High School apparently like their school. They like it so much, a couple of them wrote essays to NBC 6 bragging about how great their teachers are.

So NBC 6 is highlighting those teachers in its first “Brag About Your School” event, which turned into a pep rally of sorts Monday outside the school. The pep band, cheerleaders, and athletes from several of the school’s teams missed a few minutes of class to celebrate.

Among them, AP physics teacher Jennifer Kaelin. Subject-wise, that’s about as far as you can get from history. Kevin Taracido teaches AP art history. Both teachers were bragged about by students. Callie Sotolongo nominated Mr. Taracido saying he makes history come alive.

“I think he’s one of those rare teachers that you find once in a blue moon and he really knows what students want and need,” Sotolongo said.

Taracido said his passion for history comes from his parents, who were exiled from Cuba.

“None of the places they grew up in were places we could visit or see, and so I was just attracted to this idea of the past having such a weight for people, having such a presence, even if it’s not really there,” Taracido explained.

Andrew Browning wrote an essay extolling the virtues of his physics teacher, Ms. Kaelin.

“She’s so devoted and she really makes it an exciting class,” Browning said.

Kaelin said physics, while tough, is an exciting class.

“I know physics is a tough course and I want the kids to realize it can be fun. Yes, it can be hard, but I want them to enjoy walking in that door,” Kaelin said.

Killian High has a reputation for athletic and academic excellence. You could say they must be doing something right if students are bragging about teachers, instead of complaining about them.

So, while you history and physics students may not have much in common, at Killian, there are two amazing teachers in those subjects inspiring students.
