Brain-Swelling, Mosquito-Borne Illness Reported in Florida, Could Pose Threat to Humans

A mosquito-borne illness could threaten some families in Florida.

The Eastern equine encephalitis virus, or EEEV, could cause brain swelling in humans, the Florida Department of Health reports.

In Orange County, Florida, an increase in mosquito disease activity alerted the possibilities of EEEV after several chickens tested positive for the virus.

The Centers for Disease Control reported that on average, seven human cases are reported annually. Most cases emerge from Florida, as transmission is most common around freshwater swamps.

Health officials advise residents of Orange County to take precaution when engaging in outdoor activity by covering skin and avoiding puddles of water, as mosquitos could carry this virus.
