Brother Who Survived Hit and Run Released From Hospital

It was a bittersweet day for the family of two Dania Beach brothers who were struck by a hit-and-run driver after the survivor was finally released from the hospital Wednesday.

"It's a big relief, it's a big relief," mother Selena Brown said. "Of course, we still lost one, I wish he could be here with us. He's still here with us in spirit."

Kelv'ron Florence and his younger brother, Apollo Brown Jr., were struck and left for dead after walking home from a school game in December.

Brown Jr., 8, died as a result of his injuries. Florence, 14, had been in critical condition at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. Medical personnel thought he would have to stay in the hospital for six months to a year, but he reportedly made a miraculous recovery.

"I want to thank everybody who was praying for me and my family," Florence said.

His parents said Florence's road to recovery will be a long one. He can't hear well and has to learn how to walk again.

"Every single day for 2 1/2 months, just to be in this hospital waking up every day seeing my son trying to fight for his life, he finally made it through," Brown said. "It's just wonderful. It's good how God has brought us through this tragedy."

Authorities said 22-year-old Zachary Benjamins was behind the wheel at the time of the accident and tried to cover it up by bringing his Toyota Tacoma truck to a body shop for repairs, but someone at the shop alerted authorities. Benjamins has been charged in the incident and was released on bond.
