Broward Considers New Rules for Ride-Sharing Services Uber and Lyft

A bitter battle in Broward County over popular ride-sharing services took center stage at Tuesday's county commission meeting.

Commissioners are deciding whether to approve a new set of rules governing transportation network companies like Uber and Lyft. Several drivers for those companies and traditional taxi companies were in attendance.

"I think it's going to be pretty good for everybody, not only for Uber but it's going to be for all competition," Uber driver Victor Zapata said.

Among the proposed new regulations, ride sharing services in Broward would have to place limits on surge pricing, adopt a nondiscrimination policy and designate a certain amount of vehicles for people with disabilities.

"I think the commissioners work very hard to create a level playing field, the question ultimately is going to be enforcement," said John Camillo, with Yellow Cab.

Tuesday's meeting comes amid Uber's tremendous growth in South Florida, and pushback from traditional taxi drivers who feel they're forced to follow stricter rules and to pay millions in fees that ride-sharing companies don't.

According to county documents, Uber drivers have received hundreds of citations for operating illegally but have continued to do so regardless.
