Broward County Commissioners Discuss Resolutions After Stoneman Douglas Shooting

Broward County commissioners were discussing a number of resolutions Tuesday in the wake of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Among the resolutions being discussed at Tuesday's meeting is an item that urges the federal legislature to fund the demolition and rebuilding of the school building where the Feb. 14 shooting took place.

It's the commission's first meeting since the shooting that claimed 17 lives.

Another resolution would ask federal and state lawmakers to take action on a gun control policy and give consideration to a comprehensive ban on semiautomatic rifles.

"If there are things we can do at the local level, we should do it. And this doesn’t have to be a second amendment fight per se. This should just be the idea that if somebody is in there with an assault-type military weapon there’s going to be more damage that’s going to be caused," commissioner Michael Udine said.

Commissioners and vice mayor Mark Bogen also honored Coconut Creek Police Officer Michael Leonard, who is responsible for the arrest of shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz.
