Classes Canceled, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport Closed as Dorian's Approach Remained Uncertain

As Hurricane Dorian pushes through the Caribbean, counties across South Florida were preparing for some closures with safety in mind.

Schools in the counties of Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach are closed Tuesday. Officials said they would provide updates on Tuesday.

Florida International University, Florida Memorial University, the University of Miami, Keiser University, the West Coast University Miami campus and the Southeastern College Miami Lakes campus are closed Tuesday.

Florida Atlantic University and Lynn University are closed through Wednesday.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport closed at noon Monday, but it was possible it would reopen Tuesday, airport officials said. Miami International Airport remained open Monday, but officials said there were delays and cancellations.

American Heritage School will close both its Plantation and Boca Raton campuses on Tuesday as well. Christopher Columbus High School in Miami will also close on Tuesday.

Broward County officials announced they were opening three general population shelters, at Atlantic Technical College/Arthur Ashe Junior Campus (1701 Northwest 23rd Ave., Fort Lauderdale), Monarch High School (5050 Wiles Road in Coconut Creek), and a pet-friendly shelter at Everglades High School (17100 Southwest 48th Court, Miramar). Officials said the shelters weren't opened in response to any change in the storm track forecast, but for residents who feel uncomfortable remaining in their homes.

Florida Department of Transportation officials closed drawbridges at Andrew Avenue, 3rd Avenue and Southwest 7th Avenue and all drawbridges in the area were closed.

Fort Lauderdale will allow residents to park in three garages in the city: Riverwalk Center at 150 Southeast 2nd Street, Arts and Science District at 101 Southwest 5th Avenue and Las Olas Garage at 200 Las Olas Circle.

Port Everglades closed Sunday while all parks, libraries and animal care shelters in Broward will be closed until further notice. All parks, playgrounds and pools in the cities of Miami, Aventura and Miami Beach are closed at this time.

Tolls have been suspended on major Florida roadways, including the Florida Turnpike, Alligator Alley and Sawgrass Expressway.

Tri-Rail and Brightline services will not run on Monday and will remain closed until further notice. The Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court is closed on Tuesday as well.

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered in Palm Beach County for residential structures in Zone A and Zone B as of 1 p.m. Sunday. For a Palm Beach County "Know Your Zone" map, click here.

"Zone A includes mobile homes, sub-standard housing and low-lying areas prone to water intrusion," Palm Beach County officials wrote in a statement. "Zone B generally includes the barrier islands, land areas north and south of the Jupiter Inlet, and other surge-vulnerable areas south along the Intracoastal Waterway to the Broward County line."
